Artist’s Statement

Since before history began, man (and even some animals lower on the phylum scale) has collected things.

I am a collector. Hopefully, you are collectors too. I believe in holding dear, collecting, and sharing those things I discover that touch me, that stimulate me, that move me emotionally, intellectually, or, best of all, in both ways.

I look upon creating the image much as a poet must feel about creating a haiku. It should be whole in its surface observation while offering commentary in its interpretation.

Despite taking pictures since my pre–teen years, and consciously composing images since the age of 16, it was not until 1994, more than three decades later, that I offered my art to the general public with the creation of Beyond Words Fine Art Photography.

There are two reasons why I present my work in extremely limited edition prints, sometimes as few as 5 or 10, and occasionally as a single, unique print. First is simply because I do not want to make a career out of one or two images. Second, I believe that to command the respect due fine art photography, editions of each image should be small. Furthermore, I count the number of each edition by the total number of fine art prints made of that image, and not as the number in a particular size.

I hope that you will enjoy my collection of images, share your response to some of them, and even desire to give my art the greatest possible compliment: acquisition.
